The human body is made up of various systems working together to achieve and maintain homeostasis. Among these systems are the cardiovascular, endocrine, central nervous, digestive, reproductive, lymphatic, and immune systems to name a few of the more well known bodily systems. Another vital system, though not as commonly known, is our human endocannabinoid system. This system was first discovered in 1992, and is made up of a complex network of receptors, enzymes, and cannabinoids produced naturally within the body. This system also interacts with exogenous cannabinoids (those introduced into the body from an external source, namely the cannabis and hemp plants). This unit of discussion will focus on the therapeutic benefits of cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid found to reduce pain, inflammation, and anxiety while supporting and facilitating optimal functioning of other bodily systems.
